Ceara
The state of Ceara is located between the Rio Grande do Norte and the east and the Piaui on the west side. Some of the best beaches of the north east belong to its large coastal area : dunes, colored cliffs, coconuts trees and lagoons stretch from the east to the west. The sea here has a turquoise color.
The « jamgadas » boats with their white sails provide a unique ocean show - and their return at sunset is a whole experience in itself.
Away from the coast, the inland areas is - in spite of many artificial water reserves or « acudes » - a very dry and desert region : The Sertão.
Juzaiero do norte, situated 520km south of Fotaleza is the main town of this Sertão. Here lived « Padre Cicero » the « patron » of all north-easterners.
One of the busiest towns of the northeast, Fortaleza attracts many visitors. It offers from Monday to Sunday the most animated evening and night life of the coastal area
Located 160km east of Fortaleza, the beach of Canoa Quebrada is world famous. It’s the state « Post Cart ». The « Jangadas » lying on the white sand at the end of the day, the fresh wind from the sea and its ochre and reddish cliffs at sunset are marvelous contrasts to the azure blue sky.
Canoa Quebrada is a place you have to visit, in spite of the tourists this famous old fishing village attracts.
The west coast also offers a beach which has become a legend : Jericoacoara, 317 km west of Fortaleza is in spite of the long journey (45 minutes by plane or 12 hours by car) a place you cannot miss. To all those who have seen it, it is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
The town of Juazeiro is the most famous pilgrimage center of the « nordeste » and one of the largest in Brazil. The huge statue, « Padre Cidero », that the local people call « Padim Cico » welcomes the thousands of pilgrims coming from all over the sertao to make a wish or to thank him for a grace received. Here you can feel the mysticism and the faith of the sertao people, you have to pay a visit to Juazeiro do norte.
With a surface of only 563 ha this is the smallest of the Brazilian national parks. Located 370km west of Fortaleza in the « Chapada d’Ibiadaba » you reach it by the federal road BR22 (Fortaleza – Teresina, in the Piaui)
In the south east of the ceara state, the « Chapa do Araride » is the most favoured by the local tourists for its mild and fresh climate.
Passing through Quixada , the 160km road between Fortaleza and Quixeramobim is perfect for the visitor to get a first contact with the « sertao do ceara »
